I Don’t Like Mondays

How often do you get a call on a Monday morning from one of your employees who advises in a hoarse gravelly voice that he or she will not make it in today ? Invariably you will be told that they will definately be in tomorrow – how can they predict  a dramatic recovery with such certainty ?

Research indicates that the vast majority of Monday Morning Sickness arises from the excesses of  the weekend. The great thing about using a recruitment agency for your Temporary Staff is that you don’t have to worry about the myriad of excuses that User Enterprises encounter on a Monday morning – we take all the headache out of such absenteeism and more importantly, we do not pay sick pay - you pay for the hours worked and that’s it  !

How much productivity is lost to the economy every year through absenteeism ? How much is paid out in sick pay every year ?? The practice of paying sick pay is fundamentally flawed – it is a payment for non-productivity and should be sorted exclusively by the social insurance fund (PRSI). Of course sick pay is at the discretion of the Employer and there are always special cases, but to avoid any confusion on the matter, staff should only be paid for the hours that they work.

Currently, you must be sick for three days before you can claim a partial payment from Welfare, but if Joan Burton gets hers way that will shortly change as she tries to shift the sick-pay burden on to the employer. Human nature being as it is, if you give people the option of taking sick pay, they will take it. If it is not made   available, the employee will think once or twice before making that hoarse gravelly call !
